5:1 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Do R169 not sharply rebuke an older R170 man, but {rather} appeal to {him} as a father, {to} the R171 younger men as brothers,
5:2 - [In Context |Original Greek ]the older women as mothers, {and} the younger women as sisters, in all purity.
5:3 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Honor widows who are widows R172 indeed;
5:4 - [In Context |Original Greek ]but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they R173 must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make F45 some return to their parents; for this is acceptable R174 in the sight of God.
5:5 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Now she who is a widow R175 indeed and who has been left alone, has R176 fixed her hope on God and continues in entreaties R177 and prayers night and day.
5:6 - [In Context |Original Greek ]But she who gives R178 herself to wanton pleasure is dead R179 even while she lives.
5:7 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Prescribe F46 R180 these things as well, so that they may be above reproach.
5:8 - [In Context |Original Greek ]But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied R181 the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
5:9 - [In Context |Original Greek ]A widow is to be put R182 on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, {having been} the R183 wife of one man,
5:10 - [In Context |Original Greek ]having a reputation for good R184 works; {and} if she has brought up children, if she has shown R185 hospitality to strangers, if she has R186 washed the saints' F47 feet, if she has assisted R187 those in distress, {and} if she has devoted herself to every good work.
5:11 - [In Context |Original Greek ]But refuse {to put} younger widows {on the list,} for when they feel sensual R188 desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married,
5:12 - [In Context |Original Greek ]{thus} incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous pledge. F48
5:13 - [In Context |Original Greek ]At the same time they also learn {to be} idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips R189 and busybodies, R190 talking about things R191 not proper {to mention.}
5:14 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Therefore, I want younger {widows} to get married, R192 bear children, keep R193 house, {and} give R194 the enemy no occasion for reproach;
5:15 - [In Context |Original Greek ]for some have R195 already turned aside to follow Satan. R196
5:16 - [In Context |Original Greek ]If any woman who is a believer has R197 {dependent} widows, she must assist R198 them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are widows R199 indeed.
5:17 - [In Context |Original Greek ]The R200 elders who rule R201 well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work R202 hard at F49 preaching and teaching.
5:18 - [In Context |Original Greek ]For the Scripture says, "YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE HE IS THRESHING," and "The laborer is worthy of his wages."
5:19 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Do not receive an accusation against an elder R203 except on the basis of two R204 or three witnesses.
5:20 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Those who continue in sin, rebuke R205 in the presence of all, so R206 that the rest also will be fearful {of sinning.}
5:21 - [In Context |Original Greek ]I R207 solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of {His} chosen angels, to maintain these {principles} without bias, doing nothing in a {spirit of} partiality.
5:22 - [In Context |Original Greek ]Do R208 not lay hands upon anyone {too} hastily and thereby F50 share {responsibility R209 for} the sins of others; keep yourself free F51 from sin.
