1 It happened that while Apollos R1088 was at Corinth, R1089 Paul passed through the upper R1090 country and came to Ephesus, R1091 and found some disciples. 2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they {said} to him, "No, we R1092 have not even heard whether there F414 is a Holy Spirit." 3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to R1093 believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 When they heard this, they were baptized R1094 in F415 the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid R1095 his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they {began} speaking R1096 with tongues and prophesying. R10977 There were in all about twelve men.
8 And he entered the R1098 synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading {them} about R1099 the kingdom of God. 9 But when some R1100 were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the R1101 Way before the people, F416 he withdrew from them and took away the R1102 disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 This took place for two R1103 years, so that all who lived in Asia F417R1104 heard the R1105 word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. 11 God was performing extraordinary R1106 miracles F418 by the hands of Paul, 12 so R1107 that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the R1108 evil spirits went out.
13 But also some of the Jewish exorcists, R1109 who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches." 14 Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" 16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus; R1110 and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified. 18 Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. 19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and {began} burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it fifty F419 thousand pieces R1111 of silver. 20 So the F420R1112 word of the Lord was R1113 growing mightily and prevailing.
21 Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the Spirit F421 to go R1114 to Jerusalem after R1115 he had passed through Macedonia R1116 and Achaia, R1117 saying, "After I have been there, I R1118 must also see Rome." 22 And having sent into Macedonia R1119 two of those R1120 who ministered to him, Timothy R1121 and Erastus, R1122 he himself stayed in Asia F422R1123 for a while. 23 About that time there occurred no small disturbance concerning the R1124 Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, F423 was R1125 bringing no little business F424 to the craftsmen; 25 these he gathered together with the workmen of similar {trades,} and said, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends F425 upon this business. 26 "You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, R1126 but in almost all of Asia, F426R1127 this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods F427R1128 made with hands are no gods {at all.} 27 "Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis F428 be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of Asia F429R1129 and the R1130 world F430 worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence." 28 When they heard {this} and were filled with rage, they {began} crying out, saying, "Great is Artemis F431 of the Ephesians!" R113129 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed with F432 one accord into the theater, dragging along Gaius R1132 and Aristarchus, R1133 Paul's traveling companions R1134 from Macedonia. R113530 And when Paul wanted to go into the assembly, F433 the R1136 disciples would not let him. 31 Also some of the Asiarchs F434 who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to venture F435 into the theater. 32 So R1137 then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly F436 was in confusion and the majority did not know for F437 what reason they had come together. 33 Some of the crowd concluded F438 {it was} Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having motioned R1138 with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly. F43934 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a {single} outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, "Great is Artemis F440 of the Ephesians!" 35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, "Men of Ephesus, R1139 what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis F441 and of the {image} which fell down from heaven? F44236 "So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash. 37 "For you have brought these men {here} who are neither robbers R1140 of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 "So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against any man, the courts are in session and proconsuls F443R1141 are {available;} let them bring charges against one another. 39 "But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful F444 assembly. F44540 "For indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today's events, since there is no {real} cause {for it,} and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering." 41 After saying this he dismissed the assembly. 1 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the R1142 disciples, and when he had exhorted them and taken his leave of them, he left to R1143 go to Macedonia. R11442 When he had gone through those districts and had given them much exhortation, he came to Greece. 3 And {there} he spent three months, and when a R1145 plot was formed against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, R1146 he decided to return through Macedonia. R11474 And he F447 was accompanied by Sopater of Berea, R1148 {the son} of Pyrrhus, and by Aristarchus R1149 and Secundus of the Thessalonians, R1150 and Gaius R1151 of Derbe, R1152 and Timothy, R1153 and Tychicus R1154 and Trophimus R1155 of Asia. F448R11565 But these had gone on ahead and were waiting for us R1157 at Troas. R11586 We R1159 sailed from Philippi R1160 after the R1161 days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas R1162 within five days; and there we stayed seven days.
7 On the R1163 first day of the week, when we R1164 were gathered together to break R1165 bread, Paul {began} talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message F449 until midnight. 8 There were many lamps R1166 in the upper R1167 room where we were gathered together. 9 And there was a young man named Eutychus F450 sitting on F451 the window sill, sinking into a deep sleep; and as Paul kept on talking, he was overcome by sleep and fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead. 10 But Paul went down and fell R1168 upon him, and after embracing him, he said, R1169 "Do not be troubled, for his life is in him." 11 When he had gone {back} up and had broken R1170 the bread and eaten, F452 he talked with them a long while until daybreak, and then left. 12 They took away the boy alive, and were greatly F453 comforted.
13 But we, R1171 going ahead to the ship, set sail for Assos, intending from there to take Paul on board; for so he had arranged it, intending himself to go by F454 land. 14 And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. 15 Sailing from there, we arrived the following day opposite Chios; and the next day we crossed over to Samos; and the day following we came to Miletus. R117216 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus R1173 so that he would not have to spend time in Asia; F455R1174 for he was hurrying to R1175 be in Jerusalem, if possible, on R1176 the day of Pentecost.
17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus R1177 and called to him the R1178 elders of the church. 18 And when they had come to him, he said to them, "You yourselves know, from R1179 the first day that I set foot in Asia, F456 how I was with you the whole time, 19 serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me through F457 the R1180 plots of the Jews; 20 how I did R1181 not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from F458 house to house, 21 solemnly testifying R1182 to both Jews and Greeks of repentance R1183 toward God and faith R1184 in our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 "And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, F459 I R1185 am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the R1186 Holy Spirit solemnly testifies R1187 to me in every city, saying that bonds R1188 and afflictions await me. 24 "But I R1189 do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish R1190 my course and the R1191 ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify R1192 solemnly of the gospel of the R1193 grace of God. 25 "And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching R1194 the kingdom, will no longer see my face. 26 "Therefore, I testify F460 to you this day that I R1195 am innocent F461 of the blood of all men. 27 "For I did R1196 not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose R1197 of God. 28 "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the R1198 flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, F462 to shepherd the R1199 church of God which He R1200 purchased F463 with F464 His own blood. 29 "I know that after my departure savage R1201 wolves will come in among you, not sparing the R1202 flock; 30 and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the R1203 disciples after them. 31 "Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three R1204 years I did not cease to admonish each one with R1205 tears. 32 "And now I commend R1206 you to God and to the R1207 word of His grace, which is able to build R1208 {you} up and to give {you} the R1209 inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 "I have coveted no one's silver or gold or clothes. 34 "You yourselves know that these R1210 hands ministered to my {own} needs and to the men R1211 who were with me. 35 "In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It R1212 is more blessed to give than to receive.' " R1213
36 When he had said these things, he knelt R1214 down and prayed with them all. 37 And they F465 {began} to weep aloud and embraced F466R1215 Paul, and repeatedly kissed him, 38 grieving F467 especially over the R1216 word which he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they were accompanying R1217 him to the ship.
