Book of Matthew Chapter 22 - Read Chapter 22:15 - [In Context ]Then the Pharisees F305 left the place where Jesus was teaching. They made plans to catch Jesus saying something wrong.
22:16 - [In Context ]The Pharisees sent some men to Jesus {to trick him}. They sent some of their own followers and some men from the group called Herodians. F306 These men said, "Teacher, we know that you are an honest man. We know that you teach the truth about God's way. You are not afraid of what other people think about you. All men are the same to you.
22:17 - [In Context ]So tell us what you think. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar F307 ? Yes or no?"
22:18 - [In Context ]But Jesus knew that these men were trying to trick him. So he said, "You hypocrites F308 ! Why are you trying to catch me saying something wrong?
22:19 - [In Context ]Show me a coin used for paying the tax." The men showed Jesus a silver coin. F309
22:20 - [In Context ]Then Jesus asked, "Whose picture is on the coin? And whose name is written on the coin?"
22:21 - [In Context ]The men answered, "It is Caesar's picture and Caesar's name." Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar F310 the things that are Caesar's. And give to God the things that are God's."
22:22 - [In Context ]Those men heard what Jesus said, and they were amazed. They left him and went away.
22:23 - [In Context ]That same day some Sadducees F311 came to Jesus. (Sadducees believe that no person will rise from death.) The Sadducees asked Jesus a question.
22:24 - [In Context ]They said, "Teacher, Moses told us that if a married man dies and he had no children, then his brother must marry the woman. Then they will have children for the dead brother. F312
22:25 - [In Context ]There were seven brothers among us. The first one married but died. He had no children. So his brother married the woman.
22:26 - [In Context ]Then the second brother also died. The same thing happened to the third brother and all the other brothers.
22:27 - [In Context ]The woman was last to die.
22:28 - [In Context ]But all seven men had married her. So when people rise from death, whose wife will she be?"
22:29 - [In Context ]Jesus answered, "You don't understand because you don't know what the Scriptures F313 say. And you don't know about the power of God.
22:30 - [In Context ]At the time when people rise from death, there will be no marriage. People will not be married to each other. All people will be like the angels in heaven.
22:31 - [In Context ]Surely you have read what God said to you about the rising from death?
22:32 - [In Context ]God said, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. F314 ' F315 {If God said he is their God, then} these men are not really dead. He is the God only of living people."
22:33 - [In Context ]All the people heard this. They were amazed at Jesus' teaching.
FOOTNOTES: F305: Pharisees The Pharisees were a Jewish religious group that claimed to follow carefully all Jewish laws and customs.
F306: Herodians A Jewish political group.
F307: Caesar The name given to the emperor (ruler) of Rome.
F308: hypocrites Bad people that act like they are good.
F309: silver coin A Roman denarius. One coin was the average pay for one day's work.
F310: Caesar The name given to the emperor (ruler) of Rome.
F311: Sadducees A leading Jewish religious group. They accepted only the first five books of the Old Testament. They believed that people don't live again after death.
F312: if … dead brother See Deut. 25:5 and Gen. 38:8.
F313: Scriptures Holy Writings--the Old Testament.
F314: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob Three of the most important Jewish leaders during the time of the Old Testament.
