Book of Matthew Chapter 3 - Read Chapter 3:1 - [In Context ]At that time John the Baptizer came and began telling people a message {from God}. This was in the desert area of Judea.
3:2 - [In Context ]John said, "Change your hearts and lives, because the kingdom of heaven is coming soon."
3:3 - [In Context ]John the Baptizer is the one that Isaiah the prophet F34 was talking about. Isaiah said: "There is a person shouting in the desert: 'Prepare the way for the Lord. Make his paths straight.'" R3
3:4 - [In Context ]John's clothes were made from camel's hair. John had a leather belt around his waist. For food, John ate locusts F35 and wild honey.
3:5 - [In Context ]People went to hear John. The people came from Jerusalem and all Judea and all the area around the Jordan River.
3:6 - [In Context ]People told the sins they had done, and John baptized F36 them in the Jordan River.
3:7 - [In Context ]Many Pharisees F37 and Sadducees F38 came to the place where John was baptizing people. When John saw them he said to them: "You are all snakes! Who warned you to run away from God's anger that is coming?
3:8 - [In Context ]You must do the things that show that you have really changed your hearts and lives.
3:9 - [In Context ]And don't think that you can boast and say to yourselves, 'Abraham F39 is our father.' I tell you that God could make children for Abraham from these rocks here.
3:10 - [In Context ]The ax is now ready to cut down the trees. F40 Every tree that does not make good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
3:11 - [In Context ]"I baptize F41 you with water to show that you changed your hearts and lives. But there is a person coming later that is greater than I am. I am not good enough to take off his shoes for him. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit F42 and with fire.
3:12 - [In Context ]He will come ready to clean the grain. F43 He will separate the good grain from the straw. He will put the good part of the grain into his barn. And he will burn the part that is not good. He will burn it with a fire that cannot be stopped."
3:13 - [In Context ]At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River. Jesus came to John and wanted John to baptize F44 him.
3:14 - [In Context ]But John tried to say that he was not good enough to baptize Jesus. John said, "Why do you come to me to be baptized? I should be baptized by you!"
3:15 - [In Context ]Jesus answered, "Let it be this way for now. We should do all things that are right." So John agreed to baptize F45 Jesus.
3:16 - [In Context ]Jesus was baptized F46 and he came up out of the water. The sky opened, and he saw God's Spirit coming down on him like a dove.
3:17 - [In Context ]And a voice spoke from heaven. The voice said, "This (Jesus) is my Son and I love him. I am very pleased with him."
FOOTNOTES: F34: prophet A person that spoke for God. Sometimes a prophet told things that would happen in the future.
F35: locusts Insects like grasshoppers. The law of Moses said that locusts could be eaten. See Lev. 11:21-22.
F36: baptize(d) A Greek word meaning to immerse, dip, or bury a person or thing briefly under water.
F37: Pharisees The Pharisees were a Jewish religious group that claimed to follow carefully all Jewish laws and customs.
F38: Sadducees A leading Jewish religious group. They accepted only the first five books of the Old Testament. They believed that people don't live again after death.
F39: Abraham The most respected ancestor of the Jews.
F40: trees The people that don't obey God. They are like "trees" that will be cut down.
F41: baptize(d) A Greek word meaning to immerse, dip, or bury a person or thing briefly under water.
F42: Spirit, Holy Spirit Also called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, and the Comforter. Joined with God and Christ, he does God's work among people in the world.
F43: clean the grain John means that Jesus will separate the good people from the bad people.
F44: baptize(d) A Greek word meaning to immerse, dip, or bury a person or thing briefly under water.
F45: baptize(d) A Greek word meaning to immerse, dip, or bury a person or thing briefly under water.
F46: baptize(d) A Greek word meaning to immerse, dip, or bury a person or thing briefly under water.
