Former Deliverances and Present Troubles.
For the choir director. A Maskil F393 of the sons of Korah.
1 O God, we have heard with our ears,
Our fathers R1309 have told us
The work R1310 that You did in their days,
In the days R1311 of old.
2 You with Your own hand drove R1312 out the nations;
Then You planted R1313 them;
You afflicted R1314 the peoples,
Then You spread R1315 them abroad.
3 For by their own sword they did R1316 not possess the land,
And their own arm did not save them,
But Your right hand and Your arm R1317 and the light R1318 of Your presence,
For You favored R1319 them.
4 You are my R1320 King, O God;
Command R1321 victories F394 for Jacob.
5 Through You we will push R1322 back our adversaries;
Through Your name we will trample R1323 down those who rise up against us.
6 For I will not R1324 trust in my bow,
Nor will my sword save me.
7 But You have R1325 saved us from our adversaries,
And You have put R1326 to shame those who hate us.
8 In God we have boasted R1327 all day long,
And we will give R1328 thanks to Your name forever. Selah. F395
9 Yet You have R1329 rejected us and brought us to dishonor, R1330
And do R1331 not go out with our armies.
10 You cause us to turn R1332 back from the adversary;
And those who hate us have R1333 taken spoil for themselves.
11 You give us as sheep R1334 to F396 be eaten
And have scattered R1335 us among the nations.
12 You sell R1336 Your people cheaply, F397
And have not profited F398 by their sale.
13 You make us a reproach R1337 to our neighbors,
A scoffing and a derision R1338 to those around us.
14 You make us a R1339 byword among the nations,
A laughingstock R1340 F399 among the peoples.
15 All day long my dishonor is before me
And my F400 humiliation R1341 has overwhelmed me,
16 Because of the voice of him who reproaches R1342 and reviles,
Because of the presence of the enemy R1343 and the avenger.
17 All this has come upon us, but we have not R1344 forgotten You,
And we have not dealt R1345 falsely with Your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned R1346 back,
And our steps have R1347 not deviated from Your way,
19 Yet You have crushed R1348 us in a place of jackals R1349
And covered us with the R1350 shadow of death.
20 If we had forgotten R1351 the name of our God
Or extended our hands F401 to a R1352 strange god,
21 Would not God find R1353 this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22 But for R1354 Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are considered as sheep R1355 to be slaughtered.
23 Arouse R1356 Yourself, why do R1357 You sleep, O Lord?
Awake, do R1358 not reject us forever.
24 Why do You hide R1359 Your face
And forget R1360 our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our soul R1361 has sunk down into the dust;
Our body cleaves to the earth.
26 Rise R1362 up, be our help,
And redeem R1363 us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
