Book of Ephesians Chapter 5 - Read Chapter 5:17 - [In Context ]So don't be foolish with your lives. But learn what the Lord wants you to do.
5:18 - [In Context ]Don't be drunk with wine. That will ruin (destroy) you spiritually. But be filled with the Spirit. F39
5:19 - [In Context ]Communicate to each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord.
5:20 - [In Context ]Always give thanks to God the Father for everything. Give him thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5:21 - [In Context ]Be willing to serve each other. Do this because you respect Christ.
5:22 - [In Context ]Wives, be willing to serve your husbands, the same as the Lord.
5:23 - [In Context ]The husband is the head of the wife, the same as Christ is the head of the church. The church is Christ's body--Christ is the Savior of the body.
5:24 - [In Context ]The church is under the authority of Christ. So it is the same with you wives. You should be under the authority of your husbands in everything.
5:25 - [In Context ]Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church. Christ died for the church.
5:26 - [In Context ]He died to make the church holy. F40 Christ used the telling of the Good News F41 to make the church clean by washing it with water.
5:27 - [In Context ]Christ died so that he could give the church to himself {like a bride} full of glory (beauty). He died so that the church could be pure and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other thing wrong in the church.
5:28 - [In Context ]And husbands should love their wives like that. They should love their wives like they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself.
5:29 - [In Context ]Why? Because no person ever hates his own body. Every person feeds and takes care of his body. And that is what Christ does for the church,
5:30 - [In Context ]because we are parts of his body.
5:31 - [In Context ]{The Scriptures F42 say,} "So a man will leave his father and mother and join his wife. And the two people will become one." F43
FOOTNOTES: F39: Spirit, Holy Spirit Also called the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ, and the Comforter. Joined with God and Christ, he does God's work among people in the world.
F40: holy God's people are called holy because they are made pure through Christ and belong only to God.
F41: Good News The news that God has made a way for people to have their sins forgiven and live with him forever.
